Call for
Student Narrative Exhibition
We are thrilled to announce an open call for exhibitions in the student track of Visual Discourse 2024, dedicated to exploring and celebrating visual narratives. We invite students and recent graduates from various art, design and media disciplines to showcase their work, offering a platform for diverse and innovative narrative media.
Who can submit?
We invite students, trainees, and emerging designers (recent graduates who obtained their degree or diploma in June 2022 or later) from any graduate or postgraduate programs to submit their visual narrative design projects. Please ensure that a PDF copy of your student or trainee ID, or your degree certificate, is uploaded for verification purposes.
Exhibition
Categories
We welcome submissions across a broad spectrum of formats:

Installations:
Immersive environments and spatial narratives that challenge traditional storytelling. -
Performances:
Live or recorded performances that engage with visual storytelling in dynamic and compelling ways. -
Digital or Physical Displays:
Traditional or digital artworks, including illustrations, books, and mixed media projects. -
Interactive Experiences:
Projects that may invite audience participation, including XR, games, or other interactive media. -
Film screenings:
Live action, Animation, experimental films (fiction and / or documentary) -
Unconventional Exhibitions:
Submissions that may not be easily categorized and offer new ways of experiencing visual narratives.
Narrative
Media Types
We are interested in exhibitions that explore the following narrative media:
- Graphic Narrative: Illustrated books, comics, graphic novels, character design.
- Moving Images: Short films, animations, video documentaries or video art that convey a strong narrative.
- Narratives in Games/Interactive Narratives: Story-driven games or interactive storytelling projects.
- New Media/XR Narrative Experiences: Cutting-edge narratives in virtual, augmented, or mixed reality.
- Unclassifiable Narratives: Projects that push the boundaries of traditional narrative forms.

Submission
Each submission should include the following:

Project Document:
The creators must submit a short documentation of the project (as a PDF file) that contains the following:
- A short abstract or synopsis of the work
- The intent behind the work
- The Process followed, and
- Details of the narrative outcome

Explanation Video: (optional)
The creators must submit an explanation video of up to 5 minutes in length (for review purposes only). A working link must be provided to the video (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive in mp4 format). Viewing access must be kept open for the video. If the video is password protected, the submission must include the password with the link.
Video Format Specifications:
- Maximum duration: 5 mins
- Minimum resolution: 1920 x 1080 px (HD)

Exhibition Document
In addition to the video, an exhibition specifications document (as a PDF file) should be included that contains the following:
- Creator’s profile: short bio, including a summary of previous artworks
- Space requirements, with a detailed plan (with dimensions in meters)
- Hardware Requirements, if any, with details of what will be brought to the venue
- Special requirements, if any. For instance – low lighting, quiet space, performance stage, projection screen, etc.

Description of the audience experience, such as:
- How many people can experience the narrative simultaneously?
- What is the ideal duration for experiencing the narrative per person?
- Link to the high resolution video file for screening incase the outcome is film or animation.
All exhibits will be provided with a wall outlet, a table and a chair. All the other equipment required to exhibit the work must be brought to the venue by the participants. In case the outcome is video (film /animation), it will be screened at a designated screening space.
Submission Summary
- Project Document (background, process and outcome)
- Explainer Video: Max 5 mins, min resolution - HD (1920 x 1080 px), 20 MB max
- Exhibition Document (A document which details the space and resource requirements)
Selection & Curation
Submissions will be reviewed by the chairs, along with a panel of designers, artists and domain experts. If selected, the participants will be contacted via email.
Selection Criteria
- Originality: the work must be original, creative, and imaginative.
- Quality of Experience: the work should represent novel concepts in engaging and challenging ways, inducing intellectual curiosity or emotional responses.
- Execution: the work must communicate the concepts and be executed to a high standard.
Requirements Post Acceptance
Upon acceptance, additional details and requirements will be provided to the participants via email. The participants will be asked to prepare a poster explaining their work, which will be displayed at the venue. The dimensions and details of the poster will be communicated closer to the conference date.
Note: AT LEAST ONE participant per submission MUST attend the conference to exhibit the work and be included in the conference manual.
Exhibition & Presentation
The participants must be available at least a day before the conference to learn the location and install and test the exhibits. Further instructions will be provided at the time of acceptance.
- Exhibition - Selected works will be exhibited during the conference in the allocated exhibition space. A dedicated space for putting up the poster will be provided at the venue, along with resources mentioned under ‘Exhibition Document’.
- Oral Presentation - There will be a dedicated session for the participants to present and discuss their work with the conference audience. Details and schedule of the oral presentation session will be updated closer to the conference date.
